Thank you, Jules, for having me on your blog and my post of “Four Calling Birds”. In Cover me, there are four intricate characters – Beau and Cynthia, who at the beginning of the story are getting married. Then there are the main characters, Jay and Leanne. Beau is Leanne’s son and their connection is a bond of mother/son that is unbreakable. Beau’s loyalty lies with his mother but he supports his BFF, Jay, in the possibility that Jay and Leanne can have that forever type of love.
**Jules here–I stayed up until 3am reading this story. I couldn’t stop! Jay might be my new book boyfriend, so dang sweet and just plain yummy. Highly suggest getting it for yourself.
Jay has longed for Leanne for a long time. He’s adored her from afar and never believed he’d ever have a chance with her. But he’s willing to do whatever it takes to prove to her that they will make an amazing team and their age difference doesn’t matter.
Keeping with the “four calling” theme, I thought I’d share four of my favorite moments from Cover Me – moments from the story.
One … this made me (and my editor) chuckle…
“You shouldn’t doubt how stunning you are, Leanne.”
Her heart leapt with pleasure, but her head proclaimed her an idiot. He was just
placating her. “You’re so sweet, but also full of baloney.”
Two … Leanne has no idea how to handle any of this confusion…
Suddenly, Jay latched onto the front lapels of her robe and dragged her across the mere space separating them. Shocked, her eyes widened even further when he hauled her in against his thigh, holding her tight against his chest with a strong hand at her back. “There’s only one woman for me,” he murmured, and lowered his head.
He wasn’t going to…
His mouth plundered hers, his tongue driving deep. He tasted like melted chocolate drizzled on top of chocolate ice cream. But there were hints of stale coffee and mint underlying the sweetness.
What was happening? What chaos had shifted her world on its axis? Was she really being devoured by Jay Savage, model and sex god? Could he be as savage as his last name?
He lifted his hand to her jaw, keeping her in place as he slid his lips along hers. Slow, easy, wet, and hungry. Nothing was ever this good.
The thudding in her chest almost hurt with its ferocity.
How would she survive if he ever stopped kissing her?
Jay groaned low as he tasted her. The sound vibrated in her own ears. Leanne drew in a deep breath as he skimmed his fingers along her chest to the top of her towel while holding the back of her head with his other hand.
Air barely moved through her lungs his hold on her was tight, pressing her snug against his side. She held fast to his left bicep, hoping he’d keep her from being spun away in the craziness of the moment.
Never in her wildest dreams did she think she’d be here, up against him like this, breathing him in and enjoying his mouth on hers. If someone had told her she’d be here today, her body aflame and being the feast at this man’s dinner, she would have called them bat-shit-crazy. But damn. Her body was on fire. Chemistry and vigor she hadn’t known in over a year— longer if she admitted to herself that things had been dead for years in the bedroom with her ex—had come to life. She wanted to pounce on the man beside her.
Jay lifted his head. His molten eyes stared down at her, wanting her. The need there called to her, surrounded her. Her pulse raced and her lungs burned from breathing so hard.
Her eyes widened. What the hell was she doing?
She was going to hell for sure. In a lip-lock with a guy twenty years younger than her! She ought to be ashamed.
Speak for yourself. I’m enjoying myself.
Three… Leanne is still trying to make sense of it all …
Leanne moved around him, only to stop as her shoulder brushed his. “Damn it, I’m so confused.” She crossed her arms over her chest. “What the hell is this?”
Her whisper reached his ears, as well as the realization dawned that she was torn up over earlier.
“I’m sorry if I’ve gone too far, Leanne, but I’ve wanted you for years. As soon as I realized what desire and attraction were, you’ve been the woman I wanted.”
She bowed her head, shaking it, and covered her mouth with one palm.
“I know you don’t believe me, but it’s the truth. I’m not even sure mere words can express how important you are to me.”
“No. You’ve lost your mind. It’s ridiculous. I’m so much older than you are.” She moved to the side of the bed, her face stricken and her arms crossed in front of her as if protecting herself from him. “The wedding and all … we’re just caught up right now because we’re here alone. You’re my son’s best friend, for God’s sake. Jay, it’s okay. We’ll chalk this up to crazy loneliness.”
Her attempt at a smile did little to appease him. There was no way he’d let her diminish his feelings.
“What I’m telling you has nothing to do with timing or loneliness or your son. Only us. And over a decade of feelings on my part for me to wade through.” She drew in a deep breath and opened her mouth. “Hear me out, okay?” he interrupted. “And be honest with yourself. There’s nothing stopping us to see what might be. We’re adults who are attracted to each other. There’s something between us, Leanne. I’ve wanted you for years. I don’t think I’m wrong to believe there have been mutual feelings on your part the last few times we’ve seen one another. Please be honest with yourself and don’t trivialize our relationship by telling me otherwise.”
Their gazes locked—in combat, he supposed, neither willing to back down from the tension circling the room.
“Oh, Jay,” she whispered, then turned to peer out the small opening between the curtains of the balcony door.
He wouldn’t give up on what they could have together.
Jay moved in behind her, he inhaled her sweet-scented mix of vanilla and strawberry. His mind raced imagining her spreading soap or lotion all over herself. He swallowed hard, shoving the thoughts away. “You’re the most amazing woman in the world in my opinion. I want to show you every bit of beauty I see. I wish you saw yourself as I do.”
He lifted his hands, cupping her shoulders and massaging the stiffness there. She sighed and lowered her head, as if enjoying the attention.
“It would be so easy to fall in to your arms and forget everything else. But Jay…” Her voice was soft and low, but he heard the indecisiveness and the deep-rooted hunger underlying her words. “I don’t live life by throwing caution to the wind. And you could have any woman in the world. I’m just an old house wife who—”
He pulled her back in tight against his chest, not wanting to listen to her denials. Jay pressed his lips to her neck, kissing his way over her skin. She gasped, then relaxed in his arms, her breathing quick and rough.
“I don’t want to be with anyone else,” he whispered against her ear. “No one else exists right now. You and me. Here and now. Hungry for each other, desperate to be together. I feel the tension in your body.” He raked his teeth along her neckline, doing a mental high-five as her hands balled into fists against her belly. “Damn it, I sense your need, too. But I won’t push you. But if you tell me to go…” He wrapped his hands around hers. “I will. But don’t think I’ll give up. I’ll keep coming back hour after hour, day after day, to show you how much I want you.”
Four … a happily ever after doesn’t come without some heartbreak …
“Name five things we don’t have in common then.”
Leanne opened her mouth for what should have been a rapid reply, but nothing came out. Everything from similar music and food tastes, to favorite movies and books they both loved, came to mind. She scrambled to think.
“That’s right. You can’t, can you? We enjoy many of the same things.”
“Okay, okay. I get that but you know the age gap between us is too insurmountable. You’re fooling yourself if you don’t see that.” She folded her hands together and tried to keep from shaking. All she had wanted was to enjoy tonight.
Best laid plans, etcetera … She should have known better.
“Age is nothing but a number, Leanne. Jesus, we’ve had more fulfilling conversations this week than I’ve had in a year with over half the people I put up with every day of my life. Our banter becomes fun times of laughter and fun. The way you care for people, the charitable interests we both hold dear to our hearts … Hell, we’re like two peas in a pod, as fucking ridiculous as that sounds coming from my mouth. Not to mention how explosive we are in bed. So satisfying and fulfilling. We’re very much alike. How can you not see that?”
Heart breaking, she straightened her shoulders while trying to stay calm. The last thing she wanted was hurt him. “I agree, we share some commonalities, but we can’t have a relationship like other people.”
“Why the hell not? You’re the only one who sees our age as a problem. I’m surprised how cynical you still are after everything we’ve shared.”
His words were razors cutting deep in her soul. But she wasn’t wrong. “Really? It’s all me? Well, guess what, it’s not. Two women were in the bathroom while I was in there, oblivious that I was in a stall, and they’d seen us this morning. They laughed about you being with me. An old crone and the dumb hot model who isn’t too smart. I believe those were their words. But it’s not just me. You have your head in the clouds. People notice, and they don’t like it.”
Turning away, Jay shoved his hands through his hair in obvious frustration.
“I’m sorry, Jay. I really am. You can’t imagine how much I’ve enjoyed our time together, but you have a career that is still soaring, and I can’t give you more than this.”
He stood at the end of the bed, hands fisted at his sides, and gazed at her. Sadness and chaos darkened his irises. It was a look she had never wanted to see on his gorgeous face. Jay’s bleak despair and hurt burned into her memory forever.
“I’ve loved you for years. I’m not ashamed to admit it. Hell, I’ve worn my heart on my sleeve for years. I want to fight for you, I do. I want to stand here until you see reason, but I want you to be happy, too.”
Tears filled her eyes as her heart splintered into a million pieces.
“But I won’t push you to do anything you’ll regret, or resent me for someday. I hope you’ll see how wrong you are, and that it will be sooner rather than later. But I won’t force you to stay with me if you don’t want to.”
“Jay, I’m sorry,” she whispered, holding the blanket tight against her chest as if to ward off his words and the pain rolling off him.
“Me, too. You’re beautiful inside and out, Leanne. The most stunning and intellectual woman I’ll ever have in my life. Walking out of this room right now will cut me to the bone.
I had so much fun writing Cover Me. The older woman/younger man angle is so tempting to just continue writing with every story! LOL It’s fun to push a usually reserved older woman further than she ever imagined, or believed proper, possible. And to have a younger man to protect, worship and seduce her … nothing better.
And I do speak from experience there, considering I’m nearly seven years older than my hubby!! *g*
I wish you, Jules, and everyone a very happy holiday.
Be safe, be warm, enjoy all the fun and laughter.
