Blurb:

Every mining outpost needs a sheriff, and Eidan Cozad is just the Eleoni for the job. Newly arrived on planet with his deputy sister in tow, he faces corruption, hostility, and nearly continuous rain. A chance encounter with a defiant human postal worker adds yet one more complication to his mission.

Neat and tidy Teah Ruida thought when the Eleoni arrived and enforced some law and order, it would be easier for her to deliver her packages. Instead, she’s somehow become embroiled in spat after spat with the handsome and assertive Sheriff himself. Even though she doesn’t want to think about it, she’s become madly curious if the rumor about the strange markings Eleoni hide under their clothes is true.

Tension between Eidan and Teah ignites into passion that defies the barriers between their races. When there’s a violent ambush initiated by the settlement’s criminal organization, the future of their love hangs in the balance.

J. J. Lore Bio:

J. J. Lore has been interested in the dashing men who roam outer space since she was transfixed by Han Solo piloting the Millennium Falcon a long time ago in a theatre far, far away. Sadly, there is no way for her to join in the fun of intergalactic adventures unless she writes them, so that’s what she does whenever she isn’t taking care of the business of life. If you can’t find her typing madly on her sluggish keyboard, she’s probably poking around in a thrift store searching for the perfect pair of worn jeans or a vintage kachina bolo tie. These days she puts her anthropology degree to work when she whips up dishes from many different cultures, most of which benefit from a liberal dose of sriracha or a smear of green curry paste. Her favorite reading topics are costume history, epidemiology, and permaculture, all of which she’d like to work into a story if she’s suddenly overcome with a brilliant idea someday.

Black Dawn (Dark Light 1) by @RoseWulf of @EvernightPub #Paranormal #Erotica

Black Dawn
Hello and thank you for having me today!

I’m super excited to tell you about my newest release, Black Dawn (Dark Light 1)! As the start of a new paranormal romance series starring angels, demons, and a few things in between, Black Dawn lays the ground work for the Dark Light world. I’m thrilled to be bringing this series to you and am absolutely sure that the gamut of sexy, bad-ass, Alpha heroes and their capable heroines will keep you begging for more! But I don’t want to get too ahead of myself, so here’s a little about Black Dawn:

Blurb:
Demons are real, and they walk among us.

Isolde Duchane grew up with a demon for a bodyguard. But as she’s matured, so have her preferences. And she’s got a thing for tall, strong, dark, and powerful demonic men. Really just one very specific demonic man. It’s too bad his life is bound to hers, putting her in a terribly awkward spot since what she wants is something more than a bodyguard.

Darr was summoned to protect Izzy when she was young. And he played the part to keep his own personal demons off his back. But things are starting to get out of hand, and not just because of his powerful attraction to the woman she’s become. The demon he’s been hiding from may have found him, and if he has… he may never get to tell Izzy the truth.

Black Dawn - Final

Excerpt:
“Now that we’re all fed and we all have some alcohol in our systems,” Letty said, “who’s ready for a game? I brought all the dirty ones!”
Letty’s hand was on the suitcase supposedly filled with naughty games when Izzy felt a tell-tale tingle trickle over her skin. She lifted her eyes to the darkest corner of the cabin—the corner beside her chosen bed, of course—just as Darr stepped into view.
“Izzy,” he called in his deep, rough timbre.
Ainsley and Britt’s cousin both cried out in surprise and even Britt and Letty jumped.
“Is that—?” Ainsley whispered with a glance toward Britt.
“Izzy!” Britt cried, a mixture of fright and frustration in her voice. She really did hate being around him.
Izzy apologized and waved her hand in their direction to pacify them as she moved up to her bodyguard. “What is it?” She knew for a fact he’d have continued hiding in shadowy corners silently if there wasn’t something important on his mind.
“Not here,” he said quietly, his voice sending delightful shivers down her spine. He reached out without another word, and wrapped a single arm around her waist before stepping back with her into the shadows. Izzy closed her eyes to minimize the disorientation as he transported them to a private location, her hands twisted in his tight, black shirt.
A moment later the sensation of movement faded and his grip loosened, though he made no move to step back until she released his shirt.
Lifting her gaze to his ashen one, Izzy repeated her earlier question. “What is it, Darr? Is something wrong?” She thought she’d seen Zahk with him earlier, but she thought nothing of it—Zahk was known to show up randomly from time to time. Had it not been a pleasant visit? Or was this something else?
Darr’s expression was somber. “I’m worried there will be an attempt on your father’s life tonight.”
Sucking in a breath, Izzy gasped, “What? Why?”
“Zahk was here earlier,” Darr replied. “It was something he said. I think he was trying to warn me.”
Pressing a hand over her heart, Izzy stepped into Darr and rested her head on his chest. Dad… It wouldn’t be the first time he’d angered someone—human or demon—to the point where his life was threatened. The first time he’d crossed that line, her mother had paid the ultimate price, and when he hadn’t learned from that lesson, Izzy eventually came to the conclusion that she needed to distance herself from him. But she still loved him.
Arm coming around her again, this time in an embrace, Darr rumbled a soft question. “What do you want me to do, Izzy?”
Tears stinging her eyes, Izzy swallowed them back and inhaled a deep lungful of his scent. Crisp like mountain air, with just a hint of molasses. “I know you don’t like going,” she acknowledged, “but please don’t let him die. Not like that.”
Darr was silent for a long minute, undoubtedly debating her request with his situation. But finally his hold tightened as he embraced her and his lips came to the side of her ear. “Stay inside, stay safe, and call for me if anything happens. I’ll be back before morning.”
Her heart warmed at the intimate way he held her and the tender tone in his voice. He might be a demon, but as far as she was concerned he was really her guardian angel. Or a knight in shining armor, maybe? “Thank you,” she whispered.
He loosened his hold, nodding when their eyes met, and took her hand in his. The next thing she knew her stomach was bottoming out and her feet were standing once again on an old wooden floor in a dark corner.

Excerpt:

Coming here had been stupid. If she left quickly, Ethan would never know she’d been there.

A step inside and she knew she’d made the wrong decision.

Ethan stood and came at her. “What are you doing here?”

“Ah.” She pushed the door closed behind her and stayed put. “I’m ah…”

“How did you get in here?”

“I took a cab. You’re busy. I’ll just get back in a cab and go home.” She turned around.

He stepped in behind her and placed his hand on the door above her head. “Don’t make another move.” He kicked her feet apart and pressed his body to hers.

She stared at the door. An ache rushed from her chest to the back of her throat, and then she heard a tiny little click.

He pulled her hair back and brought his lips to her ear. “They can still see us but our voices are blocked for thirty seconds.”

She had no idea what to say to him. Many times they discussed how dangerous it would be for her to get caught up in his business. “I’m sorry.” What a pathetic thing to say. She knew better.

“You followed me here?”

“I did.” Her stupid jealousy had gotten her here. She felt like a child. Maybe she should be punished like one. She tapped her head on the door.

“We’ll have a long talk about this when we get home.”

“I understand, Sir.” Her voice came out crackly.

“How did you find my room?”

“I may have told this second blonde woman I just started working here.” She wanted to crawl under the table.

“You did what?” His tone had gotten awfully low. “What do you mean second blonde?”

“Shit.” She tapped her head on the door again. Then she remembered the cameras. “I’m supposed to be in here making you happy.”

“You’ve failed.”

“Hey!” She turned around and he plastered himself to her.

“You have no idea the kind of danger you’re in this very minute.”

“From you? Yeah, I have an idea.”

“I’m the least of your worries. I’m working tonight.”

She sucked in a deep breath. Her heartbeat raced. “I’m so sorry.” Not only had she betrayed her promise to Ethan, but she’d put both their lives in danger.

He put his hand around her throat and squeezed. “Shhh.” He stroked along the back of her neck. His touch may have been gentle but his palm pushed her head back, bringing her gaze to his. “Follow my lead and I’ll get you out of here, but first I will make good use of our time.” His beautiful hazel eyes turned dark as night.

“Okay.” She trusted him and believed with her whole heart he’d get her out of this situation. A tiny click signaled the end to their privacy.

“Are you sure about that?” He hauled her back to the couch where he’d been sitting and pulled her over his lap.

“What are you doing?” She kicked her legs.

“You need to make me happy, wouldn’t want you getting fired on your first day.” He flipped up her skirt and yanked down her panties.

Praise for the first book in the Assassins and Sweethearts Series

Desire Unexpected:

5 stars from Cocktails and Books: “Their love for each other was very fierce, and when they began to have sex, it goes completely off the charts. Their love scenes were intense and oh, so hot!  They had feeling of a kind of desperation to them. They’ve found what they were looking for in each other, and they’re clinging to it with everything they had.”

4 Hearts from Sizzling Hot Reads: “It had the hot steamy sex scenes but also the mystery behind the group Ethan belonged too. I look forward to more from the Assassins and Sweethearts series.”

4 stars from Redz World Reviews: “over all this is a great start to what promises to be a good series”

Clouded Hell by JR Gray #GayRomance @TheOriginalGray

About Clouded Hell

I survive on avoidance. Physical pain to avoid the mental. Disposable flesh to avoid relationships. Work to avoid attachment. My club became my empire of avoidance. Inside the ring millions are won and lost. The fight is confined to breaths, actions and reactions, fists and pain. Rules don’t exist. Only my opponent exists.

I’d been avoiding my needs for far too long when Remi stumbles into the Inferno and I’m hungry. The promise of a submissive with no attachment is far too tempting. I can’t resist him. He was only supposed to be a distraction, but I know I’ll never get over him. There isn’t a chance in this clouded hell.

CloudedHellFINAL
“It’s fucking hell being with you. Has anyone ever told you that?”
His grin broadened. “The whole world is hell, doll. At least with me you get a reprieve from the sun.”
“So this is hell at night?”
“I like to think of it as Clouded Hell. One of the rare cool days you’ve got to hold on to when everything else won’t quit.”
He lifted his hand again, and instead of smacking me like I expected, he cupped my cheek and brought his forehead to mine. I fucking melted, right there in his inner circle of hell, and I wouldn’t have changed it.
About J.R. Gray
When not staying up all night writing, J.R. Gray can be found at the gym where it’s half assumed he is a permanent resident to fulfill his self-inflicted masochism. A dominant and a pilot, Gray finds it hard to be in the passenger seat of any car. He frequently interrupts real life, including normal sleep patterns and conversations, to jot down notes or plot bunnies. Commas are the bane of his existence even though it’s been fully acknowledged they are necessary, they continue to baffle and bewilder. If Gray wasn’t writing…well, that’s not possible. The buildup of untold stories would haunt Gray into an early grave, insanity or both. The idea of haunting has always appealed to him. J.R. Gray is genderqueer and prefers he/him pronouns.

Hostage Hearts by @RoseWulf of @EvernightPub #RomanceOnTheGo

Hello and thank you for having me today!
I’m super excited to talk to you about my latest release, Hostage Hearts! This one is a contemporary romance standalone, and a short story as a part of Evernight Publishing’s popular Romance on the Go line!
Blurb:
Ace Bufford’s day just went from bad to worse.
All he’d set out to do was a favor for a friend, and he’d somehow found himself barging into a random apartment with a gun in his hand. Except the sole inhabitant wasn’t a stranger; she was Lydia Caldwell. The one that got away.
She wasn’t supposed to want the man who’d pointed a gun at her. But she did. Ace had grown up in all the right ways – well, except for the gun thing. Without knowing how, Lydia suddenly found herself having to decide whether or not to embrace her unexpected attraction. And together they had to find a way to get Ace out of the mess he’d landed in, or their time together would end as abruptly as it had before….
Excerpt:
“Why are you breaking into my apartment and pointing a gun at me after fifteen years?”
Ace released a long breath, slid the duffel from his shoulder, and took a seat on the opposite arm of the couch. “I can’t explain that,” he said as if she’d accept that line. “But for what it’s worth, I’m sorry.”
“Sorry?” she repeated incredulously. She shot to her feet, her adrenaline spiking in equal measure with her temper. “For which part, Ace? For dumping me so you could join the Army? For never returning my letters? For taking my virginity in the dirt behind the bleachers, or for not even giving me an orgasm to show for it? Or are you sorry for taking me hostage with no explanation?”
She thought for a moment she saw him cringe, but then it was gone and the hardened intruder he’d been when he’d bullied his way into her home returned. “Sit down, Lydia,” he said.
“Why? Why does it matter if I sit?”
Releasing a breath, Ace stood and lifted the gun. “Sit. Down.”
Her fury left her in a rush, leaving her feeling deflated and on the brink of tears. But Lydia swallowed that and reclaimed her seat with a grumbled, “Guess it’s not the hostage part, then.”
Running a hand through his hair, Ace replied, “I’m not that clumsy idiot boy you remember, okay? I’ve changed.”
Refusing to look at his eyes again, Lydia said, “Obviously. That boy at least pretended to care about me. He’d never have pointed a gun in my face.”
A soft thump drew her attention and Lydia glimpsed the discarded gun sitting on the farthest sofa cushion a moment before Ace hauled her up by the shoulders and crashed his lips over hers. He slid his tongue into her mouth remorselessly, burying one hand in her loose black hair as the other settled over her hip. He kissed her hard, bruising her lips and stroking his tongue over hers in a wicked rhythm. And, lord help her, she liked it.

Not Just Friends
Romance on the Go
Evernight Publishing
Published April 28, 2016
Blurb:
He has an insatiable penchant for tall, leggy blondes, and Taylor Simmons finds Nash
Porter’s reputation unsettling, despite how much she likes the guy. As she’s
come to learn over the years, there’s more to Nash than his assumed sexual
prowess, and her short, brunette stature ensures their solid friendship will
remain just that.
Except Nash has been invading her personal space of late, and that’s far more unsettling.
It’s time to extricate herself from his sphere, because she can’t have anything
more than a friendship with someone who reminds her of a past she conquered and
left behind. Unless Nash can convince her otherwise…

Excerpt:
“Taylor.” Christina made her name sound like a rebuke.
“Hi, Chris.” She concentrated on her driving, the speaker above her head crackling a little.
“You’re not here. It’s Thursday.”
“I told you I had to work. I left you a message.”
“Oh. Today?” Her friend wasn’t great at checking her voicemail.
“Today.”
“You should have texted.”
 “Sorry.”
Voices swelled in the background and a door slammed. “Everyone’s here but you.”
“Again, I’m sorry. The client could only meet after work.” And on any day of the week, so Taylor chose Thursday. A couple of weeks without seeing Nash should put things back to
normal.
“So it’s not… Wait a second.” Another door closed, and things were quieter. “So it’s not because of Nash?”
Wait. What? “You’ll have to speak up, Chris. I’m driving and hands free isn’t as clear.”
“It isn’t about Nash?”
“What about him?” There, a nice, nebulous response while she gathered her thoughts.
“Um, Bryan said… Well, he said Nash and you were … exploring something.”
No. And no. He did not. She gripped the wheel and checked her mirror, pulling into the outside lane and finding a place to drive off and stop. The little turnoff was graveled
and it gritted beneath the tires, much the same way Christina’s newsflash ground in her brain.
“Taylor?”
“Sorry, traffic.”
She slammed the shifter into Park and set her forehead on the steering wheel.
Any softer feelings for Nash blew right out the window. “I don’t follow. The thing about Bryan and Nash.” Christina huffed.
“They were talking at work and Nash told Bry that he was interested. In you.
Like dating.”
Her laughter might filter through the hands free as more convincing than it sounded in the confines of the car. Bad words hovered in her throat and she swallowed them
down. She chose something frivolous to say instead. “What was he smoking?”
“I asked the same thing, Taylor. And you know Nash…”
“I do know Nash.”
Taylor leaned her head back on the seat rest. “And I don’t date … guys who have
a different woman every week, Chris. What, has he run out of tall, leggy blondes
in this state? It’s not that far over the line into the next one. An easy
drive.”
They both laughed, but in truth, Taylor felt like crying. She’d known Nash for five years, met him when Christina drew her into their little group. The ensuing years had evoked a
deeper, more intimate relationship with all the members, including Nash. She
knew his foibles and his strengths. He was a good man and a good friend, and in
a short period of time, she managed to overlook—or at least not judge, too
much—his way with the ladies. His incredible good looks went a long way, but
after seeing them as often as she had, they didn’t have the same impact. Right?
His sense of humor and fairness, his caring for family and friends, kindness to animals, his strong work ethic, and total honesty made up most of the fabric that was Nash
Porter. She flinched in that moment. Maybe he saw past Taylor’s definitely not leggy, blonde, and beautiful appearance and appreciated who she was behind her exterior. What had he said?
Kind and gentle—when she wasn’t on a righteous crusade—and with a core of
steel. Hardly superficial, when she thought on it. She stared into the rear
view mirror, surveying her tousled brown hair that curled in any amount of
humidity, but was soft with natural highlights, and framed her small face
nicely.
Her eyes were her best feature, widely spaced beneath feathered eyebrows, their hazel depths shifting with her moods or reflecting the colors she wore. Today they were
green. Green for uncertainty. She ran a finger down her straight nose and
tapped her lips. She was pressing them too tightly together of late, so she
relaxed them into their natural fullness. Centerfold material she was not, but
she wasn’t ugly either. And she kept herself in shape, walking every day and
finding time in her schedule for yoga.
Her just less than a C-cup breasts matched the rest of her, even if she sometimes longed to be a few inches taller. Standing on tip toes could be a bummer. With a sigh, she
focused on the conversation with Christina.
“Sorry, Chris. I missed most of that.”
“I said for sure Nash must have run out of those blondes because he hasn’t been seeing anyone for weeks now. Maybe months. Like a drought. Haven’t you noticed the lack of
references to any women in his life? The guys aren’t even bugging him about
them. And he’s always around lately.”
Taylor was really glad she wasn’t driving. Her brain ticked over, sorting through the times Nash had “just happened by” at her work of late, with a cup of her favorite tea,
saying he had business. It hadn’t made much of an impact, seeing as he was an
architect and often consulted with the interior designers—including her—in her
office building. He was being Nash, kind and thoughtful for a friend.
The teaming up with her on game night, blocking Graham’s attempts to partner her, was
different, and more frequent. She liked Graham, but he drove her crazy when
they partnered up. When she joined forces with Nash … they fit. They got one
another and it felt so comfortable and fun. Tick, tick, tick.
Showing up to carry her groceries to the lift those two times when she’d bemoaned that task at game night—she hadn’t invited him in then either, and he’d given her that
little salute when she’d thanked him and … dismissed him? Lord. Was she living
in a different dimension? She hadn’t meant to be rude…
He’d been at the coffee house nearly every time she made it there—and Morris the barista and Nash exchanged those meaningful glances, like they had a secret. Tick, tick, tick. Had he been … courting … her?

About the book

~Editor’s Pick~

For the first time in her life, Vivian Duffy is pushing herself to the limits of her abilities. With people dying in her city she seems to be the only one willing to dig for the answers when the evidence isn’t making any sense. But when her sister fits the profile of the killer’s victims, Viv knows she may need to make some hard choices.

Jason has walked the Earth for more years than he cares to remember. Always with the singular goal of ensuring the safety of all the humans around him. Meeting the woman who was meant to be his was never even a consideration for him, not until Vivian crosses paths with him at the scene of a murder.

The danger is growing around them, and with the fate of his woman on the line this Argonaut will do whatever is needed to keep her protected.

This is a previously published work. It has been revised and edited for Evernight Publishing

Excerpt – G Rated –

Dropping his carry-on at his feet, Jason stretched his arms over his head. The flight into Seattle had been damn long. They’d had to make an impromptu landing when one of the passengers had gotten out of hand. Then there was a wait while the local police had pried him and his pissed off wife from the plane.

There’d been further delay when a storm had blown in, leaving them sitting on a runway for another three hours. Finally, they’d made it into the air during a break in the squall and were back on their way.

It had been a very long day in the air and on the ground. He was where he needed to be, though. Now all he had to do was find James so they could get their behinds moving. Which, knowing the cowboy as he did, the other man would likely be in the nearest bar. Grabbing his bag, he scoped out the area and spotted the one that would call to the Wild West gunman.

Too easy. Rolling his eyes, Jason slung the duffel over his shoulder and made his way to the tavern. Inside, he spotted James easily. The man was holding court with a gaggle of women, who were all drooling over his authentic accent. Why Mercury had thought putting the two of them together on a mission was a good idea, he’d never figure out.

Reaching the table, he dropped his luggage again. “James.”

“Jason!” James popped to his feet and came around to hug Jason, pounding his back. “Good of you to join us. Ladies, this is Jason. Jase, these are the ladies. They’ve been keeping me company while I waited for your flight. I heard ya’ll had a bit of trouble, got stuck through a bit of a storm. Bad luck, that.”

“Yeah, to say the least.” Jason gave a slight bow to the women. “Which means we really should get going, James. We have a job to do, and I’m sure you’ve had more than your fair share of drinking already today.”

“Right, true enough,” James said with a nod. “Sorry, ladies, but the man has a point. So, if ya’ll want to give me your numbers, I’ll call each and every one of ya’ll as soon as I can.” He leaned over and grinned at a blonde. “Especially you, sugar.” He handed off his phone and collected from all six.

When he had gotten his cell back, plus a few kisses, they paid his tab and went to collect the rental car. Passing James the folder from Mercury, Jason settled behind the wheel and got them moving.

“Shit, this here’s rather thin,” James said.

“I know. There’s not a lot to go on. A few really old cases that may or may not be related, and then the two newest ones. I don’t have a clue if this is anything more than a wild goose chase.”

“Damn,” James breathed. “Well, I guess all we can really do is check them out and see if it was human killings, or if it was more. Really wish these assholes would leave us calling cards. Be so much easier in the long run.”

“Yeah, just what we need. The evil ones leaving calling cards at their murders. Then we’d have the feds on each of the cases, looking for a serial killer that apparently hops from one end of the country to the other and back again. Somehow, I don’t see that as something that would work out well for us.”

“No, I guess not,” James muttered. “So, which one do we want to look at first?”

“Given where we are, we’ll look at the scene that was out north of Jefferson Park Golf Club. It’s the closest,” Jason answered. “After that, we’ll head to the one that happened in the Lower Queen Anne district. I doubt there will be much left after all this time, but you never know.” They could get lucky, though he didn’t hold out much hope for that. It hadn’t done him a lot of good over the years.

Twenty minutes later, they were studying the scene a block north and slightly east of the golf club. As he’d surmised, there wasn’t a lot left beyond some scraggly pieces of police tape and stains on the concrete.

But Jason wasn’t really interested in the scene itself. It was what was around that counted. Moving to where the body had been found, he turned his back. He wanted to know what the victim, a young woman by the name of Katy, had seen in her last moments.

It wasn’t a horrible area, not by a long shot. A little wear and tear, but nothing that jumped out and screamed “worst neighborhood on the planet.” There was some graffiti, but again, nothing that stated they were in gang territory, or a place most folks wouldn’t enter in the middle of the afternoon, let alone after dark.

For all intents and purposes, it was an average area, in an average American city, with nothing to make it stand out. Except for one thing. “We need to get Helen to pull the video feed from the night of the murder.”

“Wouldn’t the police have done that already?” James asked him.

“Possibly, likely even,” Jason said. “They’re not us, though, and they may not see what we will. Most humans don’t want to acknowledge the strange and unusual. Their minds automatically cover it up, and they play it off as a trick of the light, a shadow, or something else that allows them to sleep at night.”

“Good point.” His partner nodded. “Well, we might as well head to the next scene. Maybe there will be video around there, too.”

Jason was hoping so on the drive into Lower Queen Anne. They needed a break on the case, if there really was one. Reaching the corner of West Republican Street and Second Avenue, they found a parking spot. Jason climbed out of the SUV and looked around. Apparently, luck was on their side this time. “We have cameras,” he announced.

James nodded. “So I see. I’ll call Helen and get her to do her thing. Be nice to know if we’re just dealing with a regular old killer or a monster. Not that a regular killer is all that great, but it’s a hell of a lot better than the alternative.”

While James made the call back to the Mountain, Jason headed for the alley between buildings, where the murder had occurred. Ten feet in, he stopped. The police tape that remained was in slightly better condition than at the last spot. Turning, he gazed up at the buildings on each side.

A lot of windows, but given what was in each building and the time of night the young man, Vern, had been killed, there wouldn’t have been witnesses. Unfortunately, he didn’t think the video would be all that helpful, either, given where the cameras were located.

Walking back out to the street, he headed for the truck and James. The cowboy was off the phone and lounging back against the bumper, checking out women as they went past.

“Tell me you’re not checking out women on the street?”

“All right, I’ll tell you I’m not checking out women on the street,” James answered. “Even though they are damn fine.” He nodded to another one, receiving a smile in return.

“Anyone ever mention you are—what is that quaint saying? Ah yes … you are a dog,” Jason said.

“Woof.” James grinned at him. “We done here?”

“Yes, there’s nothing to see. We’ll need to hope we get some video. Did you contact Helen?”

“She’ll be pulling it as soon as she can. She said she had to find it first but will call as soon as she has something for us.”

“Good,” Jason said. “We might as well go to our hotel. I doubt we’ll get anything from her today, and I’m starving. They didn’t even have those little pouches of peanuts on the flight.”

“That’s because everyone’s all paranoid by the rise in allergies. They ditched the peanuts off flights, banned peanut butter from schools, and are coddling everyone. Too many people have turned into pansies. It’s deplorable,” James muttered with a sneer.

Jason wasn’t about to argue with him. Climbing into the truck, he put it in gear and got them moving toward their hotel. Food, a shower, and then sleep. In that order.

As the only senior graphic designer at Downey Handbags, Zane Kotsky expected to become the head of the creative art department when the company planned to expand its business. His hope crashed when it turned out that the company wanted someone from outside to be the manager. Knowing that, Zane planned to leave the place at once, but that was before he met the man who would become his boss, Joachim Wessling.

This is a previously published work. It has been revised and edited for Evernight Publishing.

Excerpt

“Downey must be very lucky to have you.”

The kid—because that was what he was to Joachim, a kid—stared at him a bit too long.

“Watch the road.”

Zane snickered, and switched his attention back to the traffic ahead. “Lucky. Yeah, I’d call it lucky they decided not to kick me out after denying me what should have been mine by right.”

Joachim hadn’t expected to hear those words. “I’m sorry. I don’t have any idea what you’re talking about.”

Zane sucked in a harsh breath.

“God, I’m sorry. That was totally uncalled for. Forget what I said, okay? And enjoy your stay here. People at Downey are the best, or I wouldn’t have lasted this long.”

Joachim frowned. Honestly, he didn’t know this would be the case. When they’d invited him to join the company, there was no talk that someone else might be qualified to be the head of the art department. In fact, he was under the impression that there hadn’t been an art department before, only a small division under a larger unit.

“You know, I can always talk to Mr. Downey and set things straight.” Joachim had never before seen an expression change from slight panic to utter horror.

“No,” Zane practically shouted. “You can’t tell him that. You have to promise you’ll never talk to Mr. Downey about the things I said. I’ll be happy to work under you. Work together with you. It was just a spur-of-the-moment outburst. Promise me, please?”

Joachim tried to think past the words work under you, and Zane’s pleas didn’t help the matter. He took a deep breath and gazed ahead.

“Okay, I promise not to say anything, though I’d prefer it if we’re all open and honest and don’t hide things from each other.”

“I’ve been open and honest with you.”

“Yeah, and I bet you regret it.”

The story…

TEASER:

Forgetting all of his training and everything he should have done next to ensure the safety of his team, Devon ran forward, dropping to his knees beside the prone figure. “Oh, shit, Finn.” There was no missing the fear in his voice. With hands that shook, he checked for a pulse and breathed a sigh of relief at the rhythmic thumps he felt against his fingers.

As gently as he could, Devon rolled Finn onto his back, and his breath caught at the sight of swelling and bruising around his left eye. “Jesus Christ, Finn, what the hell happened?” Devon ran his hands over his skull, searching for any contusions or swelling that could indicate a head injury or concussion. He breathed a sigh of relief when he found nothing.

Finn moaned, and his eyes fluttered open, and not for the first time, Devon found himself drowning in his beautiful green eyes and wondering why in the hell Finn was in the house. “Dev?” Finn asked in a weak voice. An ache settled in his chest. He had heard that voice in his dreams on so many nights, but hearing it now, weak with pain rather than passion, just about killed him.

“Yeah, Finn, it’s me,” Dev answered as he swept a lock of Finn’s dark hair from his forehead. “Where else does it hurt, baby? I want to get you up onto the bed so Sam can get a look, but I don’t want to hurt you.” A flash of hurt that Devon knew had nothing to do with his injuries flickered in Finn’s eyes before his anger apparently rose to mask it.

“It’s none of your concern where the pain is, and I sure as hell am not your baby,” Finn said, sneering the last word and Devon nodded. He understood Finn’s anger and accepted it to a point.

“LT, Sam’s headed out to your truck to grab his med kit,” Marcel said from the door. “You need any help getting Finn up onto the bed?”

Devon looked in earnest at Finn whose eyes narrowed, attempting to read his mood. “No, Marcel, I do not need any help getting Finn into bed. I can do that all on my own,” he said with a bit of humor.

Finn growled over the guys’ laughter in the background. “Get the hell away from me, Devon Roberts, I can make it to the bed myself.” Finn gritted his teeth and rolled to his side, a groan of pain caused any humor on Dev’s part to evaporate. Frowning, Devon swiftly swept Finn up and into his arms, wincing at his quick inhalation of breath.

Devon moved swiftly to the bed, waiting while Marcel removed the dust cloth, then laid Finn down on the quilt, absently noting that it was the same damn one he had used all those years ago. “Stop it!” Devon ordered as Finn started to struggle to stand. “Stay there, Finn, and let Sam have a look at you.” Sam put his med kit on the bed and opened it, but Finn kept trying to stand. Devon reached out a hand and gently gripped his chin, tilting Finn’s face up so that their gazes locked together.

“I mean it, Finn. Stop trying to move around, and let Sam have a look at you. Once we have you all squared away, you are going to tell me what the fuck happened.” A red hue rose up Finn’s face and his gaze slid away, but Devon gently turned his face so Finn had no choice but to look at him once more. “You are going to tell me who did this to you, Finn. I know what being beaten looks like, and you will tell me who turned their fists on you.”

“What do you care, Dev?” Finn’s expression turned bleak and he kept his voice low, obviously uncomfortable with the attention, and Devon’s heart ached even more. “You’ve had eight years to pick up the phone and see how I was doing. Now, last time I checked my cell phone, I hadn’t missed any calls so I figure you didn’t really give a shit. So why bother now?”

Five questions for the author

Q: Every book is special to an author.  What is it about this book that makes it special for you?

A:  This is my first MM.  I have loved this genre from the first time I read Stormy Glenn, Sam Crescent and Cree Storm.  There is something about the powerful expressions and imagery you can create with the scenes are between two male characters, especially the hot scenes!

Q:  Sometimes things happen when you are writing a series that wasn’t expected at all.  Have you had this happen to you?

A:  Heaps!  I am not a planner.  I am a write-by-the-set-of-your-panties kinda girl.  There have been moments where I will finish up a scene and be like WTF?  I did not see that coming!  This whole series started with an image I found that I simply couldn’t let go of.

Q.  Why do you always include a danger element to your books?

A.  I write what I love to read.  I love books that take you on a journey, but where the characters face a challenge that adds an element of urgency to them and to the book.  As a reader, there is nothing I like more than getting that goose bump, hair rising on the back of my neck feeling as I join the characters within the book I am reading on the journey to solve their mystery.  I want to give that to my readers.

Q.  What are you working on at the moment?

A.  I have book eight of the Grey River series over half way, as well as book two in the Sniper Team Bravo series.  There is also a new Shifter Ménage series coming soon and a standalone MM as well.  Soooo many stories to tell, so little time!

Q.  Do you have anything to say to your current readers or to those that haven’t yet read you work?

A.  If you have read any of my books, thank you so very much!  It blows my mind that someone has actually read something that I wrote, but gosh I hope you enjoyed it!  Did you?  Please let me know, I find I suffer from a slight case of needy-nelly with my writing.  If you haven’t read my book, but you love erotic romance stories between strong men and an independent woman, where the path to their happily ever after can be a bumpy one, but there is always a happily ever after, and their love and laugher is real on every page, then you’ll find my books right up your alley!

Outside of writing, Maia loves to eat, so she loves to cook!  Her herb garden is legendary, but she still has issues getting tomatoes to grow.  She’s been a performer for years, and has even sung on international stages, she would love to own a classic Ford Mustang one day and of course have the opportunity to race it on a race track without fear of a speeding ticket.

Although ultimately her dream is to be able to write full time on a sandy beach with a Mai Tai at hand, she is quite happy to fit her writing in when she can.  As long as someone reads her books, gets a laugh and maybe come to love her characters and much as she does, then she feels that she is living her dreams no matter what!

Wet-Banner1
Excerpt:

It was all she could do to keep from jogging to the shore when she spotted him, sitting on the edge of the tide with his feet in the water.
As she drew nearer, she slowed, taking in the sight of him with his elbows resting on raised knees and his chin cradled between his linked thumbs and index fingers. It was a thoughtful, reflective position. Sobering. She almost felt bad for some of the thoughts that had been swimming around in her head a moment ago. Almost.
“Hey.” Brooke settled next to him on the sand. She kept her feet curled up and out to the side at her knees so as to keep her shoes from getting wet.
Blake turned his attention to her, his posture relaxing as a smile lifted his lips. “Hey, thanks for meeting me.”
She returned his smile. “So what did you want to talk about? Did something else happen?”
“No. I just thought maybe we should talk one-on-one, you know, after you’d had a chance to sleep on everything.” He paused and studied her, looking for something. Whether or not he found it, Brooke had no idea. “How are you handling all that?”
Releasing a breath, Brooke said, “Me? I’m handling it okay. I mean, for me it’s more surreal and startling to learn about the existence of people with powers like yours. I’m not being targeted, remember? So it’s only scary in the abstract.”
Blake arched a brow at her choice of words. “Abstract, huh? And how’s that?”
Brooke allowed her smile to feel a little flirtatious as she leaned forward and brushed her fingertips along his cheekbone. “I don’t want anything to happen to you is all,” she whispered.
Blake swallowed and the tide rolled in a little higher, just barely brushing her knees. Then he’d threaded his fingers into her hair and crushed his lips to hers, his other arm winding around her waist to hold her in place.
It was all she could do to swallow the moan in her throat as she kissed him back. His hair was soft over her fingers when her hands slipped behind his head, and his tongue was hot in her mouth when her lips parted. She’d nearly forgotten how good he tasted.
She could’ve sworn she purred as his tongue stroked hers, desire burning low and hot in her belly. It was such a contrast to the cold water that continued to tease her knees. Blake’s fingers dipped beneath her lightweight sweater, his soft touch teasing her skin and finally pulling free the moan she’d been fighting. He sucked on her tongue, putting more weight into his touch, until his thumb found the right spot to have her arching into him.
He released her lips as her breasts pressed firmly into his chest, trailing his kiss down the side of her throat. She held onto him, moaning again as he shifted to cradle her body more properly against his.
“Blake,” she breathed as his tongue danced around the hollow at the base of her throat.
He rumbled and lowered his head, tongue and lips sliding to her collar bone and down to the line of her scoop-neck sweater. And oh, how she wanted him to keep going. To tear off her clothes and kiss the rest of her aching body with the same tender hunger he was bestowing to her collar and neck. How she wanted to feel his heady touch in private places. Brooke doubted she’d ever been so immediately hungry for a man.
Blake made a sort of groaning sound and removed his lips from her skin. “God, you’re distracting.”
“That’s a bad thing?”
He grinned. “Not really. I just feel like there’s more that should be said first.”
“And you can’t talk while you’re kissing me.” Her words were resigned, because she knew he was right. She just didn’t want him to be.
“Exactly.”
Looping her arms loosely around his shoulders and making no move to otherwise adjust herself, Brooke said, “So talk. What’s on your mind?”
The question was ridiculous, of course. She knew what was on his mind in more ways than one. She just suspected she hadn’t properly absorbed it all yet. There was still some sort of surreal distance between her sense of reality and the ideas the Hawke family had discussed the day before. People who can throw lightning. Really? But then again, the man she was currently embracing could become water—she’d seen it herself. So was the rest really so far out there?
Blake released a breath and pulled her in enough to rest his head on her shoulders. “Everything, I guess,” he admitted. “I really want my uncle to be crazy, but … that’s not his style. He’s a realist, even if his ‘realism’ sounds impossible.”
“And you’re worried,” Brooke guessed gently, her fingers weaving through his hair and massaging his scalp in an attempt to comfort him.
“Yeah.”
“Blake, that’s natural,” she said. “They’re your family, and you just found out you might have enemies who can generate your kryptonite at will. That’s heavy.” As she said it, she realized she was exactly right. She could only imagine how terrifying that would be for him and his brothers. To go from knowing they had more power than the people around them—knowing they were stronger—to learning they had invisible enemies designed specifically to hurt them. Although that might be over-simplifying…
Blake straightened after a moment, taking his time dragging his gaze up to hers. “I know. And I swear I really did want to make sure you were okay, all things considered.” He paused and brushed his lips lightly over hers again. “But it’s possible I was also hoping for a distraction.”
Swallowing a schoolgirl giggle, Brooke raised exaggeratedly dramatic eyebrows at him. “Weren’t you just complaining about that?”
“I was confused,” Blake insisted, sliding the hand still beneath her sweater a little higher. “I understand now.”
“Understand what?” she challenged, fighting her natural response to his touch.
Blake met her challenge with a confident grin and caught her mouth in another hot, demanding kiss.
